It seems to me that children who are out of school learners naturally gravitate toward independent reading. It’s part of the day. There’s too much homework and busywork in regular school and those students seem overwhelmed with less time for independent reading and thinking. Great article!

When my kids were young, I wanted to homschool them, but an early divorce prevented it. As a Miami Dade College English prof, I had a few home schooled students, and they were my best writers. I figured it is because they did a lot of independent reading. Books, both fiction and nonfiction, that interest different children are certainly the key.
