Judy, it will be a personal journey for you, to some extent, too, thinking of your parents. I was laughing with a writing friend at my book launch who said that she doesn’t write historical fiction. But her award winning book is set in the 1980’s. When you think about, as you say, all of the luxuries we take for granted today, that even applies back forty years ago to some extent. Taking ourselves back to the hollers of the Appalachians, and adding in their profound isolation to the lack of modern conveniences puts us in another world indeed!

Great interview, Mindy! I find the subject matter and historical timeframe of Toni’s novel so intriguing! I can’t wait to read it! My parents grew up around this same time period and I know both lived without many of the luxuries we take for granted today. Congratulations, I hope to see that your next MG will be coming out soon!

As a lover of historical fiction, I have had Light Comes to Shadow Mountain on my “to read” list for quite some time. Knowing that Down Cut Shin Creek was an inspiration for the book makes me even more excited to read it as I read the book many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
